Tomo River, Colombia

Peacock Bass Fishing

Seven Days in The Jungle Fishing the Tomo River

This January, Gallatin River Guides traded icy Montana winters for the lush, tropical landscapes of Colombia’s Vichada province. Our destination: the Tomo River, a pristine tributary of the Orinoco River and one of the most renowned peacock bass fisheries in the world. Known for its vibrant ecosystem and legendary population of trophy peacock bass, the Tomo is a bucket-list destination for adventurous anglers. These fish are as aggressive as they are stunning, boasting vivid greens, golds, and bold black patterns. Their explosive strikes and relentless fights test both skill and stamina, offering an exhilarating challenge that makes every cast unforgettable.

Our journey began in Bogotá, Colombia, where we hopped on a charter flight to the remote town of La Primavera. From there, we embarked on a rugged 4-hour adventure in 4x4 vehicles to reach the river. The final leg of the trip was a 30-minute boat ride downstream to our campsite. The accommodations were nothing short of remarkable—floating tents designed for two, complete with full bathrooms and electricity. Having such comfort and convenience in a remote jungle setting was truly mind-blowing and added an unexpected touch of luxury to an otherwise wild and raw experience.

The day after arriving at camp, we kicked off the adventure with a bright and early 5 a.m. start. After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we set out for a full day of fishing on the Tomo River. Right from the get-go, anglers were hooking up left and right, with doubles becoming a common sight. The action was electric, with all three species of peacock bass found in the area making appearances.

Midday, the crew returned to camp for a gourmet lunch, where we swapped stories from the morning's excitement. Re-energized, we headed back out to the water for an afternoon session, chasing trophy-sized peacock bass that tested both our skills and endurance. By evening, we returned to our comfortable safari-style campsite, where another delicious meal awaited us. We ended the day with cold drinks and laughter around a bonfire, trading more stories under a canopy of stars—a perfect close to an incredible day.

Each day that followed brought more of the same: exceptional service from our local guides, mouthwatering meals, and thrilling fishing. While the fishing was relatively physically demanding, it was among the most unique and rewarding any of us had ever experienced. Every member of our group had successful days on the water, landing multiple game fish species. One angler even managed to catch what might be the first freshwater stingray on the fly—a moment none of us will ever forget!

The highlights of a trip like this go far beyond the fishing itself. Sharing delicious meals, building friendships with the guides, connecting with fellow passionate anglers, and exploring a remote and untouched ecosystem are experiences that truly steal the show. The guides’ deep knowledge of the region and their dedication to conservation were evident in every moment, adding a deeper appreciation for the unique ecosystem we were lucky to explore.

Afloat Adventure’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices stood out as well. Their strict catch-and-release policies ensure these extraordinary fish continue to thrive, protecting the ecosystem for generations to come. If you’ve ever dreamed of venturing into remote waters to chase exotic species like peacock bass, this trip delivers an unforgettable experience.
